Former Warrior Brennan Leitao (Sacramento State) is named 1st team All WAC

Lewis was joined on the first team by pitchers Brennan Leitao and Sutter McLoughlin. Senior Andrew Ayers was the team's lone second team selection.
Lewis, a redshirt freshman from Newark, Calif., led the conference with a .396 batting average in league games. While starting all 56 games, he led the Hornets with a .351 average and 74 hits. Lewis was also tied for the team high with 46 RBIs and 15 doubles. During the season, he had a pair of 13-game hitting streaks and reached base in all but six contests. He is the second Sacramento State player to win the WAC's Freshman of the Year Award in as many years, following Rhys Hoskins.
Leitao was 8-3 during the regular season with a 2.79 ERA. In WAC games, he was even better with a 7-2 mark and 2.11 ERA. The sophomore from Irvine, Calif., enters the WAC Tournament as the team leader in ERA, innings pitched (93.2), strikeouts (45) and opponent batting average (.216). His eight wins are tied with Brandon Creel for the team high.
McLoughlin, just a year removed from Rio Americano HS, was selected to the first team after setting the Sacramento State single season record with 17 saves. That total led the WAC, ties him for third in Div. I and is the most amongst freshmen. McLoughlin appeared in 27 games where he had a 2.36 ERA and limited the opposition to a .214 average. McLoughlin's 17 saves place him second on the Hornet career list.
Ayers earned all-WAC honors for the second consecutive season. The senior hit .289 and tied Lewis for the team lead with 46 RBIs. He also had eight doubles and ranked second on the team with nine home runs. Ayers, who was the WAC Player of the Year in 2012, will leave Sacramento State ranked among the top in program history in at-bats, hits, runs, RBIs and doubles.
CSU Bakersfield swept the rest of the conference honors with shortstop Tyler Shryock earned the Player of the Year Award, Jeff McKenzie the Pitcher of the Year and Bill Kernen the Coach of the Year.

EUGENE, Ore. – J.J. Altobelli has been named to the latest watch list for the Brooks Wallace Shortstop of the Year Award. The Ducks’ senior is one of 14 players on the list.
Altobelli has the highest fielding percentage (.981) on the list while batting .283 with 23 RBI. He has started 55 of Oregon’s 56 games this season. Altobelli has been remarkably steady during his career committing only 30 errors on 853 chances in 224 career games.
The Newport Beach, Calif., native is Oregon’s all-time leader in four separate statistical categories, while ranking in the top 10 in eight others. He has more starts (221) than any Duck in history, while also holding school records for at bats (776), hits (205) and runs scored (119). He is second all-time in doubles with 38, just two behind teammate Ryon Healy, while also ranking among the school’s all-time leaders in RBI (3rd), hit by pitches (3rd), multiple-hit games (3rd), walks (4th), intentional walks (4th), multiple-RBI games (4th) and stolen bases (8th).
The Brooks Wallace Award, sponsored by Mizuno, recognizes the nation’s top shortstop and will be presented during the College Baseball Hall of Fame’s Night of Champions on June 29 in Lubbock, Texas.

The Grand Canyon University baseball team, making their first appearance in the NCAA Division II West Region Championships since 2002 and winless in the postseason since joining the division in 1999, punched their ticket to the NCAA Division II College World Series in Cary, N.C. with a double-header sweep of Chico State today at Bruce Hurst Field in St. George, Utah.Click here to view the bracket for next weekend.

Entering today, the Antelopes (39-17) had to win twice to advance in the postseason, while the Wildcats needed just one win. With the pair of losses, Chico State concluded their 2013 season with a 37-18 record.
GCU won the first game, 9-6, and led the entire way in the second, posting a 6-2 victory.
GCU will next play St. Edward’s, the winner of the South Central Region on Sunday, May 26 at 2 p.m. (Arizona time). The tournament opens on Saturday, May 25 with Franklin Pierce facing Shippensburg and Minnesota State Mankato to face Grand Valley State. On the second day, Coker will faceoff against Tampa, while the final game will see the ‘Lopes play St. Edward’s.
In the first game, starter Trent Wilson pitched a strong 5.0 innings for GCU, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits with 2 strikeouts in his 16th appearance (11th start) of the season. He did not factor into the decision as the ‘Lopes were forced to utilize four relievers in the contest, with Mark Jarrett improving to 4-1 on the season with 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.Brian Kraft continued to swing a hot bat, going 2-for-5 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBI. Charles Wagner and Kyle Raidy picked up 3 hits apiece in the contest, while Steven Swingle and Brandon Smith added 2 hits. Paul Panaccione and Wagner also chipped in with 2 RBI.
Kraft led off the bottom half of the first with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a well-executed groundout to the right side by Panaccione. Derek Mendoza hit a hard groundball to the third baseman, who was charged with an error as Kraft crossed home plate and handed GCU an early 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats answered with a run of their own in the third inning on back-to-back singles with two outs. GCU responded with a pair of two-out hits themselves, as Swingle scored Wagner to once again give the ‘Lopes a one run lead at 2-1 in the bottom of the frame.
Chico State tied the game for the second time with another two-out hit, this time an RBI double to left centerfield, in the fourth.
Continuing the trend of two-out hits, Kraft unloaded on a 1-2 pitch, sending it over the right field fence to score Smith and Raidy and put the ‘Lopes back on top, 5-2. The homer was Kraft’s team-best fifth long ball of the season.
For the third straight inning, Chico State put a run on the board, this time with the help of a wild pitch and throwing error by Swingle.
In the top of the seventh, the Wildcats had the bases loaded with two outs, plating two runs via back-to-back hit batters and knotting the score at five. Cody Repenning entered the game in relief and induced a groundout to third base, where Mendoza made a great play to end the inning. During what was a wild top of the frame, Chico State head coach Dave Taylor and first base coach Cody Foster were ejected from the game after arguing an infield fly call.
Chico State carried their momentum into the eighth inning, scoring the go-ahead run with two outs and runners on first and third. However, the tables turned when the ‘Lopes loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the frame. Similar to last night, Panaccione came through with a clutch single up the middle to score Smith and Chris Lindmark, the latter of which represented the go-ahead run as GCU claimed a 7-6 lead.
Wagner proceeded to lace a line drive down into right field, scoring two more GCU runs and finding himself with his first triple of the season while extending the lead to 9-6.
Jarrett faced the minimum three batters in the top of the ninth to secure the win for the ‘Lopes in the first game.

Panaccione, who had a knack for clutch hits throughout the regional, handed GCU an early 2-0 lead with a single up the middle to score Raidy and Kraft. In the final three games of the regional, Panaccione collceted eight RBI and plated the game-winner in ecah contest.
In the next inning, Smith continued his hot-hitting versus the Wildcats, plating Mendoza with GCU’s third run of the game.
Panaccione picked up his third of the game with a sacrifice fly to centerfield in the top of the seventh.
Sharing the RBI’s with Panaccione, Smith extended GCU’s lead to 6-0 with an RBI bloop double into right field to score Mendoza and Swingle with just one out on the board.

New scoreboard lights up Ryan Lemmon Stadium

Fans attending this weekend's Ryan Lemmon Showcase baseball games in Irvine will notice a new state of the art scoreboard at Ryan Lemmon Stadium.
The inning-by-inning scoreboard was tested on Wednesday and will be in use for Friday's two games. Over the weekend, the Showcase will feature seniors from eight leagues.

The inning-by-inning scoreboard was tested on Wednesday and will be in use for Friday's two games. Over the weekend, the Showcase will feature seniors from eight leagues.

On Saturday, the Sea View League faces the Empire League at 1 p.m. and at 4:30 p.m. the Trinity League faces the Sunset League.
There will be home run hitting contests between the games on both days.
The scoreboard is 30 feet wide and 40 feet tall and includes a 12 foot wide by 9 and a half foot video screen. There is also a clock on top of the scoreboard and an indicator which displays speed on pitches, which will be tracked by a radar gun.
The Ryan Lemmon Foundation made a major donation for the scoreboard, which is being installed at a cost of approximately $60,000, Lemmon said. The cost would have been much higher had it not been for numerous donations, Lemmon added.
"The scoreboard that was here had gotten to the point where nobody could read it," Lemmon said. "One thing led to another and we had the good fortune that a philanthropist gave the foundation us some money and a challenge grant and we raised some money at a dinner."
The facility on 285 East Yale Loop in irvine, off of Barranca, is the home field for Woodbridge. But Irvine, Northwood and University have the option of playing games there too.
After the foundation began raising funds through a number of events, coaches suggested that the best use for the money would be for a new scoreboard for the stadium, which opened in 1992 and was renamed a couple years later after the late Ryan Lemmon.
Ryan Lemmon, a Woodbridge High baseball star, was killed in a traffic accident in 1994. He was attending Pepperdine University at the time and pursuing his dreams of one day playing baseball in the Major Leagues.
Woodbridge Coach Tim Murray said the coaches are appreciative of what Lemmon has done.
"I think Guy comes from a good place and he's got a big heart," Murray said. "He cares a lot about high school sports.
"I think it (the scoreboard) is pretty special. It's going to be special for a long time. It's going to be tough to beat. I did coach at El Dorado and El Dorado has a special scoreboard, but Guy kind of looked at their plans and said, 'what can we do?' This is for every school in Irvine and all the teams in Irvine are going to be able to utilize this field. Think of all the kids that this is going to benefit."
A new sound system, also donated by the foundation, will also be in use this weekend, Lemmon said.
